These two bases sit at opposite ends of the feel spectrum. One is dense and conditioning, the other is light and clean-rinsing. Neither is better on its own; it depends on what kind of wash you prefer.
What is a soap base?
A soap base is the core ingredient blend a bar is made from. It sets the lather, the texture on skin, and what the bar leaves behind after you rinse.
We use three soap bases: glycerin, goat milk, and shea butter. Shea butter and glycerin are the two furthest apart in feel.
Shea butter soap base: rich and conditioning
Shea butter is the richest-feeling of the three bases. It creates a dense bar, a thick, creamy lather, and a conditioning after-wash feel rather than a squeaky-clean one.
It suits people who enjoy a rich wash and want skin to feel soft afterwards, including on drier patches.
Glycerin soap base: light and clean
Glycerin is a natural by-product of soap-making. Many commercial manufacturers remove it to sell separately as a cosmetic ingredient; in our glycerin bars it stays in.
The bar is clear or semi-transparent, the lather is light, and the feeling after rinsing is clean without residue. It is a useful everyday bar for anyone who prefers an easy-rinsing wash, especially in warmer months.
Shea butter vs glycerin: quick comparison
| Shea butter soap base | Glycerin soap base | |
|---|---|---|
| Lather | Thick, dense | Light, clear |
| Feeling after wash | Conditioning, soft | Clean, light |

A quick way to decide
If you prefer the richest, most conditioning texture, start with shea butter.
If you prefer a light, easy-rinsing wash, start with glycerin.
Many people keep both: a shea butter bar for drier months or drier patches, a glycerin bar for everyday use in warmer weather.
